Project 1 - Quant-um Leap
Location: York

Holgate Windmill is owned by the City of York Council and forms the centre of a small traffic island. Holgate was a small village/township on the outskirts of York which has now become part of the urban fringe. Holgate Windmill was built in 1770 and is a Lincolnshire pattern mill made with local handmade bricks and an Ogee shaped cap. It is a five sailed windmill which together with the fact that it was fitted with double shutters. makes it unique.

It is the last remaining York windmill and when fully restored would be one of only two in all of Yorkshire. It is a Grade II listed building. Holgate Mill retains much of its interior workings, the exterior has lost its sails and fantail and the metal cap and rendering has much deteriorated. This has necessitated temporary safety fencing to prevent accidents.

The Council has commissioned a structural report on the fabric of the mill which should be available within the next few weeks. A full and complete survey or the building and its works by a qualified millwright is essential to understand the true state of the mill.

The society was set up in 2001 by a group of local people who were increasingly concerned about the deterioration of this unique building.
